Which rug should you be using?

Horses and ponies, just like us, want to be comfortable, not too hot or cold and want to stay dry when in wet conditions. For those very reasons, horse rugs have been introduced in order to provide horses with the comfort and happiness they need.

Out in the fields, in a trailer, in the stables or perhaps at a horse show are all places a horse may visit on a regular basis. These places all have very different temperatures and weather conditions, therefore it is crucial to ensure your horse is “dressed” appropriately.

Turnout Rugs

This particular rug is perfect ALL YEAR round when your equine is OUTSIDE in the fresh air. However, here in Britain we experience drastic weather changes, with bitterly cold winters swiftly moving on to warm and sticky summer days. Therefore, a rug that is designed to keep a horse warm in winter, will not be suitable in summer, as they will simply overheat. This is the reason why there are

  • Heavyweight
  • Mediumweight
  • Lightweight

Turnout Rugs available. Each of the weights are designed to help horses maintain a comfortable temperature during the change of seasons. Heavyweight Turnout Rugs, needless to say, are designed for winter, mediumweight for autumn and spring seasons, and finally lightweight over the summer months.

Stable Rugs

This type of rug is perfect for WINTER when your horses or ponies are INSIDE the stables and the air temperature has significantly dropped. It is important to remember Stable Rugs cannot be used outdoors, as they simply are not designed with withstand the weather conditions outside. As with the Turnout Rugs, Stable Rugs are available in

  • Heavyweight
  • Mediumweight
  • Lightweight

Depending on how cold the weather is, that will determine which type of weight is required. Heavyweight Stable Rugs, as you would guess, are best suited for extremely cold¬†conditions, in addition to using a stable rug, you may also choose to use a Turnout Rug as well, which will keep your horse extra warm. Mediumweight Stable Rugs are best used in cold conditions, where the weather is not freezing (as this rug wouldn’t keep your horse warm enough) yet not mild either (as this could mean your horse is too warm). Finally, Lightweight Stable Rugs are designed for mild temperatures, as although the air may not feel particularly cool, your horse will still need that little bit of warmth given by a Lightweight Stable Rug in order to be comfortable.

Fly Sheets

Fly Sheets / Fly Rugs are designed for the SUMMER months, in order to help your horse or pony stay fly and dust free. In addition to protecting your horse from flies and dirt, some equestrian lovers choose to use a fly sheet in order to prevent sunburn.

Fleece Rugs

Fleece Rugs, sometimes called Coolers, are used, as the name “Coolers” says, to COOL a horse or pony down AFTER EXERCISE. On the other hand, they may also be used as EXTRA WARMTH underneath a normal Stable Rug.
